Building a Home Insurance Inventory Before You Need One: A Connecticut Homeowner's Checklist

How to document your home's contents before a claim, not during one - a practical checklist for Connecticut homeowners.

The paperwork that actually speeds up a claim

After a loss, the slowest part of a homeowners claim is rarely the roof or the drywall - it is reconstructing what was inside the house and what it was worth. A home inventory, put together before anything happens, is the single piece of documentation that shortens that process the most.

What a usable inventory actually includes

A room-by-room list is a start, but the detail that matters to an adjuster is proof, not memory:

  • Photos or a walkthrough video of each room, including closets and storage areas
  • Serial numbers and model numbers for major electronics and appliances
  • Purchase receipts or, where those are long gone, a reasonable estimate of replacement cost
  • Separate documentation for higher-value items - the kind of things that may need to be scheduled individually on the policy rather than relying on standard contents coverage

Where people usually fall short

Most inventories cover furniture and electronics and stop there. The gaps that show up during an actual claim are usually items stored outside the main living space - a finished basement, a detached garage, a shed - and anything seasonal, like holiday decorations or outdoor equipment, that is easy to forget because it is not visible most of the year.

Keep it somewhere the house fire cannot reach

An inventory stored only on a home computer or in a filing cabinet does not survive the kind of loss it exists to help with. Cloud storage, a shared drive, or emailing a copy to yourself and a family member outside the household are all more durable than a paper folder.

How this connects to your policy

An inventory does not replace a conversation with an advisor about whether your contents coverage and any scheduled items are set at the right level - it gives that conversation something concrete to work from. If it has been a while since your policy was reviewed against what is actually in the house, request a review or get in touch.
